We all have a monster within; the difference is in degree, not in kind so when is a monster not a monster? Movie: The Platform Director: Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia Cast: Ivan Massague, Alexandra Masangkay, Antonia San Juan, Zorian Eguileor Genre: Sci/fi horror thriller Rating: 4/5 Country: Spain Rated restricted due to profanity, nudity and cannibalism Available on Netflix A friend of mine recently said to me that she thinks us human beings are animals. I said yes, we are, but an intelligent animal at that. Watching ‘The Platform’ sorely reminded me of my friend’s observation. The movie is based solely inside a futuristic vertical prison, with one cell on each floor and two prisoners in each cell. The prison has a platform of food descending down the middle for the cells everyday. It’s laden with delectable and scrumptious looking food, enough to cater to the 400-600 cell mates. The massive dumb waiter platform stops at each floor for two minutes, before descending to the next. In those two minutes, prisoners have to eat their fill. Of course, by the time the platform can even reach the bottom it’s just a skeleton of its former self. The catch is the shuffle that takes place every month. Prisoners can end up with the same cell mate on one of the top floors or unfortunately at the bottom. The ones on the top floors are of course healthier and the ones at the bottom either die, commit suicide or get eaten. Into this vertical hell comes Goreng (Ivan Massague), a volunteer who wants to spend six months here in exchange for an accredited diploma. Goreng is disgusted seeing the barbarian way his cell mate ate, “It’s fairer to ration out the food,” he explains to his cell mate, who quips, “Are you a communist?” In a world full of different kinds of people, it’s difficult to get everyone on the same page. The Platform is a disturbing movie. It’s message is clear though, that the only way for the human race to survive is to share, be kind and care about each other. 🎥 @netflix @theplatformmovie
