Whoah! How is this allowed? Showing a painting of a man peeing in a river?!? Well, peeps, there is a lesson to be learned here because all three close-up images teach you something. They are part of nine illustration for PROVERBS. A proverb is a short snappy expression that tells us something true about the world. A very popular that you may already know is “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
So what do each of the three teach us? Let’s look at them in order:
1. To piss against the moon “— means don’t bother aiming for the impossible. Probably one of the most iconic *pisseurs* in art history!
2. “He strews roses before swine” — means don’t waste your good stuff on people who won’t appreciate its value. For example, a pig doesn’t care for roses, it wants grain! Another version of the proverb is “Do not cast your pearls before swine” which originated from the Bible: Mathew 7:6.
3. “Between two stools, he falls to the ground.” This means that if you are indecisive for waaaaay too long, you might miss out on an opportunity. A later version of this proverb focuses on falling on one’s “arse” or “tail.” It’s up to you whether you want to deliver this proverb delicately or directly but don’t sit on it for too long. Get it? (😂MG I am hilarious and this is how I entertain myself during the COVID19 crisis)
